When Gukesh Dommaraju defeated Ding Liren (reigning world champion) in the fourteenth match of the world chess championship held at Singapore, and became the world champion, he has created breathtaking records. First, at the age of 18, he is the 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧 breaking the record of the mighty Garry Kasparov who has been holding this record since 1985, when he became champion at the age of 22. Second, he is the first 𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 to win the world championship title. A superlative sequel to his amazing achievements so far – third youngest grandmaster in chess history, youngest ever to attain an ELO rating of 2750, two individual gold medals in Chess Olympiads till date …! The first three decades in this century so far have seen an Indian crowned as world champion at least once! Congratulations Gukesh!! We are delighted and proud of you!

Just after the match, I happened to read an interview of Gukesh when he was 11. When asked by IM Sagar Shah what his ambition was, Gukesh had answered in his boyish voice “I want to become the youngest chess champion in the world” 😊 I recall a similar answer which I happened to hear personally in 1983. At the end of National Sub Junior Championship in Goa, there was an interview by All India Radio of the winner (Viswanathan Anand) and the runner (yours truly). Anand announced his ambition was to become a world champion, which he did in 2000! [This post for more details – https://lnkd.in/geJ-e-q9 ]

My chess playing blossomed under the tutelage of my elder brothers sivakumar visvanathan and V RAVICHANDRAN, While we watched together Gukesh winning the eleventh round, today we celebrated by a joy filled conference call 🙂
